Chaos and Cosmos is an impermanent contemporary art platform based in Paris and active internationally. Conceived as a flexible and evolving structure rather than a fixed venue, it produces exhibitions, performances, and discursive programs that investigate power, corporeality, and the symbolic dimensions of space.
Founded by independent curators and artists Julia Cistiakova and Ekaterina Shcherbakova, the platform builds on more than fifteen years of collaboration across Europe and beyond. Both alumni of the École du Magasin, they work between Paris and Zurich (Cistiakova) and Paris (Shcherbakova), developing research-driven, site-responsive projects in dialogue with institutions and local contexts.
Their work has been realized in France, Switzerland, Lithuania, Canada, Russia, Belgium, Estonia, the USA, and other countries, in collaboration with institutions such as Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, the Venice Biennale, the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Estonia, and the Armenian Center for Contemporary Art NPAK, as well as numerous regional art centers and galleries across France and Europe.
Individually, Julia Cistiakova is the Artistic Director of JPS Art Foundation Zug–Paris and has led significant projects, including serving as Director for Contemporary Art Development in Nièvre in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region (French Ministry of Culture, 2021), Artistic Director of IN SITU patrimoine et art contemporain in the Occitanie region (2020), and Director of the Contemporary Art Space in Privas, France, (2017–2020).
Ekaterina Shcherbakova develops an artistic and curatorial practice focused on performance and feminist theory. An alumna of the Marina Abramović Institute and former doctoral researcher at Paris 8 University on performativity, she has recently presented work at Hangar – Center for Artistic Research (Lisbon), Kimonos Art Center (Paphos), Poush and Jakmousse in Paris. From 2018 to 2025, she taught “Unlearning Curating” at Paris 8 University.
In 2015, they received the French National Curatorial Prize at La Box in Bourges for an annual exhibition and performance program. They are the authors of numerous essays, books, catalogues, and monographs, and regularly publish in international contemporary art journals. Both are members of IKT – International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art, as well as the French Curators’ Association C-E-A.
